From the desk of Poor Publishers,
Gout is a disease commonly observed in middle aged or older men and post-menopausal women. Gout is characterised by high levels of uric acid in the blood and sodium salts of uric acid in joints, cartilages, and kidneys.
Plasma levels of uric acid in normal individuals is 2 to 5 mg%. But in people susceptible to gout will have more than 7 mg% and even up to 20 mg
%. There may be attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis which is often the reason they approach for medical treatment. Inflammation and severe pain on the joints noticeably the metatarsal, knee and toe joints may be experienced.
During acute attacks food containing low purine is recommended. Purine is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound, consisting of a pyrimidine ring fused to an imidazole ring. Purines and pyrimidines make up the two groups of nitrogenous bases. These bases make up a crucial part of both deoxyribonucleotides and ribonucleotides, and the basis for the universal genetic code.

The general term purines also refers to substituted purines and their tautomers. The purine is the most widely distributed nitrogen-containing heterocycle in nature.
Sometimes purine intake may restricted even during th
e quiescent period. Purines are oxidized to uric acid in the body, which is normally excreted in urine.Food containing low purines and hence recommended are Cabbage, Potatoes, Maize, Beetroot, Carrot, Cucumber, Lady's finger, Lettuce, Pumpkin, Sweet potato, Tomato, Turnips, Rice, Wheat, Butter, Oil, Cheese, Cream, Egg, Fruits of all kinds, Gelatin, Milk, Nuts, Sugar and sweets, Tapioca, Yeast, Brinjal etc.
Foods containing purines and therefore to be controlled are all flesh foods and extracts from meat such as gravies and soups.
Obese people suffer the acute symptoms of gout more severely. Weight must be controlled, but weight loss methods adopted should not be continued during ac
ute attacks. This is due to the catabolism of adipose tissue reduces the excretion of uric acid. A gradual weight loss on a 1200 kcal diet for women and 1600 kcals diet for gentlemen are recommended.
Protein in diet shall be about 1 gram/kg body weight. Fat may be supplied not more than 60 grams on daily basis. Carbohydrates may be supplied. Water and other fluid intake can be little more than normal. More fluid intake will help flesh out uric acid. Tea and coffee can also be given in moderate amounts. Fruits and vegetables are the recommended food for people suffering from gout.
